Most people don't realize that an emergency can be saved before it becomes a disaster when we have a restoration plan and an immediate response. It is this lack of knowledge that delays our response time to the emergency, and it takes a very long time before everything can be emergency response restoration back to normal. So it is very important for us to learn how to deal with a natural disaster in order to save ourselves from future situations.
So what exactly is a natural disaster?
Natural disasters can be anything from a flood, to forest fires, and landslides. These are caused by nature itself, and we are often quick to say that all natural disasters are totally unexpected, and that is why we were unprepared. But if we look closely, more often than not we could have prevented it if we weren't so ignorant.
Flood Control :
Floods can be brought about by various elements including incredibly high rainfall, tsunami, failure of dams etc. Nature in itself has mechanisms built in it that is meant to cancel the effects of these floods such as wetlands absorbing excess off water, trees and plantations using this water for their needs, and rivers, and streams collecting runoff water to connect to the sea.
Why then don’t they work as they should?
Since man needs to meddle in all things, he does as such in this component as well. Trees are being cut in huge numbers for mechanical purposes, along these lines giving up less trees to ingest water.
Wetlands is a type of soil that has high moisture absorption, and retention properties. These lands have been used to build houses, and buildings. Add to that areas of lands that are covered by pavements and roads, the amount of soil on the surface to absorb this excess water is very little.
And last but not the least, in many places, the path that should have been the way a run off or river flows has now been flooded with houses. In this case, the floods are not the ones invading our space. It is we who do that.
Nature has an answer for everything, but when we don’t respect that, we are bound to face consequences that are likely to cause more damage than good.
