After a water emergency, the first thing you should do is shut off the source of water. You can use towels to absorb as much liquid as possible and dry up any standing water. Your next step would be to call your insurance company so they can give you advice on how to go about restoring your home after water damage.
When you get to the point that it is no longer an "if" but rather a "when" water will become trapped in your home there are some simple steps you can take to minimize the damage, and restore your property back to its previous state. The first step of course is preventing flooding from happening at all. Water damage restoration isn't always the answer, and it might be preferable to simply minimize the damage and move on.
Here are 7 tips for restoring water damage in your home, office or business when you are on a budget.
1) Check electrical equipment for signs of water damage, especially outlets and circuit breakers. You may need to shut off power completely or at least use some caution if there has been flooding in the area.
2) Open windows and doors to facilitate fresh water drying in the event that there has been flooding in your home or business. Even if you are currently dry, opening windows will allow remaining moisture to escape.
3) Shut off all power in your home by locating your electrical panel (most likely where the main breaker is located) and turning off the main breaker. If you have a water leak, especially one that has been unattended, there is a chance of electrical current being exposed to standing water. Entering this situation without first shutting off power can be deadly if you are unaware how to properly shut down your power.
4) Remove all mats from entry ways including door mats, shoe mats and welcome mats. For outdoors, remove them from the exterior of your home or business. Mats will trap water coming in from outside which will make it harder for the remaining drying process to take place.
5) Pull furniture upright and away from walls to aid with airflow. If you are unable to pull your furnishings away from the walls, leave a gap of several inches to promote airflow throughout the room.
6) Reading lamps and other ceiling fixtures can be removed from their base and raised off of the ground by several inches if needed. This will allow air to circulate under furniture as well as between objects resting on flooring. You may need to use caution when attempting this as to not break the lamp or other fixture.
7) In some cases you may need to remove carpets from the flooring entirely. This will require an additional purchase of carpeting, but it is more affordable than replacing ruined floors and carpets. Carpets can trap a lot of moisture which will cause mold to grow if not properly dried. Doors can also be removed to aid airflow and make moving furniture easier.
If that is your current situation then there are at least four things that can be done while you prepare yourself to get professional help. While they won't replace the need for restoring the damaged area, they will at least make it look better.
If you have had a major water damage issue in your home, office or business then you are likely feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done. You are not alone if you are thinking this is more than I can handle.
There are services available for restoring water damage but sometimes you just can't afford them. Maybe you've had water damage in the past and it's left you with some damaged flooring. Or maybe, like me, you are on a budget.
Use baking soda and cat litter to absorb the moisture from flooring and furniture. You can then sweep off the excess into either the trash or toilet. Both are good places for excess water that is causing you problems.
Use fans and dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air in your home, office or business. This causes less of a strain on your wallet since it doesn't cost anything to run them while they are working their magic.
Use vinegar and water to clean the wood floors in your home, office or business. It's a safe way to remove any mildew while disinfecting at the same time.
Dried off what you can with paper towels so you are not moving around wet surfaces when trying to fix them. This will reduce the mess that is likely to get on your carpet or flooring.
